Decapping Expander Mandrels:

We craft our solid carbide expander mandrels for use in any of our Modular sizing dies with the appropriate collet. These mandrels, precision-ground from solid carbide, come in .001″-.0005″ increments, offering unparalleled accuracy for your reloading needs.

Unique Down-Stroke Expansion

Our Decapping expanding mandrels expand the neck of your brass on the “down stroke” of your press, not the “up stroke.” We position the precision-ground expanding detail high in the die, just below the cartridge’s neck/shoulder detail. This design ensures a seamless transfer of the cartridge neck from the Neck Sizing Bushing to the Expander Mandrel.

Superior Consistency and Support

This innovative approach yields more consistent expansion. The brass starts perfectly centered in the die and expands immediately as you draw it out of the die body. This method provides ideal support, contrasting with “up stroke” expansion that stresses an unsupported case/neck.

Precision Manufacturing Process

We rough turn all our Expander Mandrels first. Then, we precision OD grind them for their full length, ensuring concentricity of all outside details in a single operation.

Variety of Lengths

We offer our decapping expanding mandrels in five lengths: Short, Short Medium, Medium, Medium Long, and Long. The required length depends on your specific cartridge. We provide a comprehensive list of calibers and corresponding lengths, though not all sizes are available in every length.

Collet Compatibility

For 20 CAL, 22 CAL, 6MM, 25 CAL, and 6.5MM mandrels, use 7MM collets.

For 27 CAL, 7MM and 30 CAL mandrels, use 5/16″ collets.

Important Considerations

Remember to account for .0005-.002 of springback, depending on your brass brand and whether it’s annealed. Please note that if you order the wrong mandrel, you’ll be responsible for any exchange fees.

Our mandrels require a larger collet than the mandrel itself due to our precision grinding process. We start with a larger piece of material and reduce it to size, leaving the top part of the mandrel (which interacts with the collet) larger.

Our decapping expanding mandrels come in 5 different lengths.  Short, Short Medium, Medium, Medium Long, and Long.  The length of mandrel needed will depend on the cartridge you are loading.  Below is a list of cartridges and their corresponding lengths.  Not all calibers/diameters will be offered in every length.  In addition, we’ve included a .025″ shim recommendation in order to balance decapping pin protrusion (minimum .125″) and Neck/Shoulder bushing-to-mandrel hand-off.
